Common Mistakes People Make When They Hear “Church Media”

Let’s be honest, when most Nigerians hear the words church media, a few things come to mind:

  • It’s just camera boys pressing buttons.
  • Make dem just help us stream service sha.
  • Put mic, on light, record… finish!

But church media is more than that. And sadly, it’s misunderstood in too many places. If we’re truly called to reach the world, then we must stop treating media as an afterthought. Because in today’s world, media is ministry.

Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when they think about church media and what you should be doing instead.

1. Thinking It’s Just About Equipment:

Many churches buy cameras, tripods, even mixers… and that’s where it ends. But what’s the point of having gear you don’t know how to use? Equipment doesn’t deliver excellence... systems and people do.

"We’ve seen churches with basic gear outperform churches with millions in investment, simply because they had structure."

2. Assuming Volunteers Will Figure It Out:

This is one of the biggest mistakes we see. Passion is not the same as precision. A willing heart doesn’t replace training. Yes, let the young people serve but also teach them, coach them, and guide them.

"Your volunteers can only produce what you’ve prepared them for.
Let’s stop setting them up to fail."

3. Treating Media Like Decoration:

Media is not a “nice to have.”
It’s not about aesthetics or hype. It’s your voice, your brand, your message.

The same care you give to preparing the sermon should reflect in preparing your livestream, slides, graphics, and communication. Why? Because people now hear you first through your media, not your mic.

4. Thinking Media is Just for Big Churches:

We hear this a lot: “We’re a small church, we don’t need all that.”

But here’s the truth people are scrolling, and they are searching. You don’t need to be big to be effective. You just need to be clear, consistent, and excellent with what you have.

5. Doing It Alone:

Every church has its grace. But not every church has media grace.

And that’s okay. That’s why God sends partners. You don’t need to figure it all out alone. You don’t need to wait until it’s perfect. What you need is a system, support, and someone who understands both spiritual flow and technical clarity.

So… What Should You Do?

Invest in training, not just tools.

Give your media team direction, not pressure. Take your online presence seriously, it’s your first altar. And if you need help? Get help.
